Save the date – announcing the TEDxKraków 2013 theme – Make!

Yes…you should definitely save this date!

We meet again at the event of the year – TEDxKraków will take place on 25 October at the AWESOME  Małopolski Ogród Sztuki.

We’re also very happy to announce the theme for this year conference which is…Make!

But what exactly does this mean?

Making = taking your life into your own hands.

Maker culture is spreading – from coders, hackers and 3D printing communities to bakers, artists, brewers, activists and academics – people are choosing to create and do it for themselves, by themselves.

The individual maker has been around since the beginning of humanity, but we are now moving beyond the artisan and entering a new era of DIY where sharing with the wider community is key and learning is not the mechanised, formalised process offered by our education system. Rather, it’s an exploration through creativity and play – something many of us will have to relearn!

Key to this is the rise of open source, open hardware, open data… The world is opening up and the idea of centralised command and control is crumbling. New software, hardware and digital technologies means that anyone with enough interest anywhere can start to turn their idea into reality.

So this year’s TEDxKraków will be a celebration of making. We’ll be asking our speakers to explore and demonstrate the practice, and to ponder what it takes to make more makers. We’ll be featuring some of Kraków’s makers and encouraging our audience to have a go at making something – anything!

Together we can make Kraków better.

TEDxKrakówCinema June

It’s time for another inspiring TEDxKrakówCinema evening! This time, we’ll talk about what’s happening in the city.

We will look at urban initiatives – see how FabLabs and other labs work, where “hackers” and “makers” solve problems with new and old technologies while having a lot of fun doing it. We will talk about some grassroots initiatives that are taking place in Kraków such as Hackerspace Kraków or newly opened „Wytwórnia.” We’ll have a workshop focused on bringing back the culture of DIY – Do It Yourself – and together we will explore how it changes our lives, both locally and globally.

The guest for June’s TEDxKrakówCinema event will be Jacek Złydach – blogger, active member of  Hackerspace Kraków, technology coordinator of the Quantified Self Kraków initiative, and, as he proclaims himself, the”3D printing Do It Yourself evangelist.”

Please join us next Tuesday (June 4) at 19.00 at  Kino Pauza, located at ul. Floriańskiej 18. The meeting will be held in Polish. Free admission

A Look at This Year’s TEDGlobal Speakers

This summer, ideas worth spreading are coming to Edinburgh, Scotland once again for the TEDGlobal 2013 conference. The conference is divided into twelve sessions spread out over four days, from Tuesday, 11 June until Friday, 14 June 2013. The overall theme of this year’s TEDGlobal is “Think Again” – a call to rethink our place in an increasingly changing world. It will features experts, writers, and entertainers from such diverse fields as neuroscience, sustainability, biotechnology and economics, all of whom will challenge TED viewers to rethink their approaches to the world’s problems.

Each of the sessions are divided thematically as well, starting with “Moments of Truth” on Tuesday, which features seven speakers from such diverse backgrounds as a musician playing an ancient instrument (carny player John Kenny) to the former prime minister of Greece (George Papandreou). Other speakers include Manal Al-Sharif, a women’s rights activist in Saudi Arabia, Steve Howard, who made IKEA’s popular furniture sustainable, Jose Miguel Sokoloff, who helps rehabilitate former Colombian guerrillas, and Anne-Marie Slaughter, who focuses on the work-life balance in the modern woman’s life. The session is rounded out by classical guitar virtuoso Tariq Harb.

Session 2 begins that afternoon and bears the elusive title “Those Flying Things”. First up, Raffaello D’Andrea will speak about his collaboration with artists and engineers in the creation of autonomous technology. In the same vein, Lian Pin Koh promotes the use of autonomous aerial vehicles, better known as drones, for conservation purposes, while Andreas Raptopoulos wants to use those same drones to make deliveries in otherwise unaccessible areas and Greg Asner uses them to map out how people affect their environment from the air. If all of this so far sounds like science fiction, then sci-fi author Daniel Suarez will make you feel right at home. Finally, there’s “musical alchemist” Elizaveta, who will perform her unique blend of opera, jazz and pop for the TEDGlobal audience.

Manal al-Shraif

Photo: Manal al-Shraif, the woman who dared to drive, will be featured in Session 1.

The final Tuesday session is titled “Exquisite Enigmatic Us” and is heavily focused on the human brain. Neuroscientist Russell Foster will explain how sleep affects our brains, Elizabeth Loftus explores where false memories come from, neuroscientist Sandra Aamodt looks at how we interpret new research about our brains, and Kelly McGonigal explains all of these lofty scientific concepts to non-scientific audiences. The session will also feature visual artist Hetain Patel, who examines questions of identity, and singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield.

Wednesday’s first session, titled “Money Talks”, begins with Chrystia Freeland, who explores the differences between the working poor and ultra rich in her new book. Other speakers include economists Toby Eccles, Didier Sornette and Mariana Mazzucato, as well as Annette Heuser, who is striving to reform the rating agencies that got us into such a big mess recently. Perhaps the most daring character, however, is Apollo Robbins, a skilled pickpocket who is willing to share (some) tricks of his trade.

Session five takes us from the wilderness of Wall Street to the relatively calm and order of nature. “Listening to Nature” aptly features Bernie Krause, who has spent his career doing just that and recording his results. Other specialists of the natural world include bee researcher Marla Spivak, neuroscientists Suzana Herculano-Houzel and Greg Gage, science historian Sonia Shah, and, for a real walk on the wild side, wild sex biologist Carin Bondar. The session will also feature jazz pianist Yaron Herman.

Session six turns your worldview upside down in “World on Its Head”. It begins with speaker and guest host Nassim Assefi, who is a physician, novelist, and activist for health and human rights, along with second guest host and think tank head Gabriella Gomez-Mont. Other featured speakers include theological writer Lesley Hazleton, filmmaker Holly Morris, who tells stories of women making waves around the world, architect Teddy Cruz, who looks towards the future, Middle Eastern political scientist Trita Parsi and Latin American economist and innovator Juan Pardinas. Continuing the international trend will be Beirut Marathon founder May El-Khalil, Cuban performance artist Tania Bruguera, and Egyptian singer Dina El Wedidi.

The final session on Wednesday carries the theme of “Regeneration” and focuses on developments in biological engineering. You’ll be able to hear Molly Stevens speak about biomaterials that can replace human tissue, Siddharthan Chandran talk about repairing the brain, GrŽgoire Courtine describe spinal cord fixes, Mark Kendall show innovative ways of delivering vaccines, and see photographer Fabian Oefner’s stunning depictions of nature. The day is rounded off with Le Trio Joubran and their oud music.

Thursday’s sessions begin on a serious note with “State of the Nations”. It features such intellectual heavyweights as sociologist and philosopher Renata Salecl, author of The Tyranny of Choice, as well as Chinese political scientist Eric X. Li, Arab sexuality writer Shereen El Feki, sustainability expert Johan Rockstršm and political theorist Benjamin Barber, who advocates for the role of mayors. Singer-songwriter Lissie will finish the morning session.

Session nine is titled “Forces of Change” and features guest hosts Adrian Hong and Erik Hersman, the former of which is a strategist who wants to empower citizens with technology, while the latter has a focus on the African technology community. Other speakers include economists Dambisa Moyo and Charles Robertson, both of whom focus on world and emerging markets, North Korean refugee Joseph Kim, former Prime Minister-Elect of Libya Mustafa Abushagur, and South African technology writer Toby Shapshak. Kenyan funk band Just a Band will entertain the crowd with their unique blend of funk and electronica.

The final session of 13 June is called “Imagined Beauty” and features speakers with such unique careers as cloudspotting (Gavin Pretor-Pinney), mathemagic (Arthur Benjamin), systems biology (Uri Alon), bioprinting (Andras Forgacs), travel writing (Pico Iyer) and poetry criticism (Stephen Burt). To figure out just exactly what those occupations entail, be sure to catch the session, as well as visual artist Alexa Meade and jazz-pop singer Jamie Cullum.

This year’s TEDGlobal conference concludes on Friday, 14 June, though they’ve saved some of the best for the final two sessions. Session eleven features the theme of “Tech Impact”, and as you would expect, it focuses on how technology is causing us to think again about such topics as education (Anant Agarwal), writing (Abha Dawesar), music (Tim Exile), economics (Alessandro Acquisti), creativity (An Xiao Mina) and childhood (Eben Upton).

The twelfth and final session of TEDGlobal 2013 is aptly titled “All Together Now”. Its diverse speakers range from Benedictine monk Br. David Steindl-Rast to political philosopher Michael Sandel. Other speakers include activist Charmian Gooch, co-founder of anti-corruption organization Global Witness, business strategist Michael Porter, open-source engineer, hacker and artist Salvatore Iaconesi, and finally, singer-songwriter RuthAnne.

We hope you’re looking forward to this year’s TEDGlobal as much as we are! There’s only a month left to go, so stay tuned to hear how you can watch the conference live right in Krakow!

TEDxKrakówCinema May

How does speed affect the quality of information published in the press? What about the quality news? What affects their value? And how is it verified?

During the next TEDxKrakówCinema we will talk about the skill of the journalist and the ethics of the profession. Together we will reflect on the condition of the mass media in the modern world. We’ll also touch on blogs and embargoed news.

Our guest at the May edition of TEDxKrakówCinema will be Bartosz Pilat – a journalist for Gazeta Wyborcza Kraków.

We look forward to seeing you at Kino Pauza on the 2nd floor at ul. Floriańska 18 at 7pm on Tuesday 7 May . The meeting will be held in Polish. Admission is free and no reservation is required (although you should come early if you want to guarantee a seat).

It’s time for TEDxKrakówCinema – where can curiosity lead?

Is curiosity actually the first step to hell? What does it mean to be curious about the world and not be afraid to ask questions? What does it mean to be creative? What emerges from curiosity? We will try to answer these and many other questions at the April edition of TEDxKrakówCinema.

Together, we’ll reflect on the issue of “curiosity” in the context of children and scientists – these two groups within our community are not afraid of challenges and experiments, the state matters plainly and are not afraid to ask questions.

Our guest curator, Agata Wilam, is also not afraid to ask questions. She’s co-founder and president of Poland’s first Children’s University, well known to us as a speaker at TEDxKraków in 2011 and host of TEDxKids@Krakow in 2012. Get ready – it’s going to be interesting and there will be a lot of questions ;-)

We’re going to be at Kino Pauza which is located at ul. Floriańskiej 18 on Tuesday 9 April. We’ll be starting at 19.00 and we’ll head downstairs to continue the discussion over a beer at 20.30.

Entry is free but arrive early if you want a seat. The meeting and discussion will be held in Polish, but the discussion over a beer will be in whatever language you feel most comfortable in.

TEDxKrakówCinema

We’re coming up to Easter, which has always had a close association with food. It marks the end of the long winter period and the lenten fast and the start of spring. Here in Poland we have numerous foods that are only made and eaten at Easter, as well as the centuries-old tradition of taking a basket of symbolic foods to be blessed. So with this in mind, at the March edition of TEDxKrakowCinema we will be talking about food and how we eat..
Access to wholesome, safe, nourishing food is considered by many to be a basic human right – integral to healthy people and communities. Yet as eaters most of us are part of a complex system of farmers, food processors, wholesalers, distributors, regulators and cooks. What’s more, as city dwellers, this system is largely invisible to us, so we have to trust that all the parts are working properly to deliver to us what we need.
Yet the growing rate of ‘lifestyle diseases’ and obesity in the western world, as well as the perennial problem of hunger in the developing world suggests that despite massive industrialisation and rationalisation of how we produce our food, something’s not quite right.
So through the TED Talks we will be watching this month, we’ll have a look at where our food comes from, what it’s doing to us and what we can do in response.

Kids Speak to Kids

We’re used to children making us laugh, cry and worry on a regular basis. But can they make us think? We think so, which is why for the second time we will be presenting TEDxKids@Kraków – a TEDx for kids, by kids (with a little help from the TEDxKraków folks).

The second edition of TEDxKids@Kraków will take place on 17 May 2013, and it will be in Polish. Our topic this year is ACT! – as in, don’t just talk about something, act to make it happen! You can get an idea of what the conference will be like by watching videos of last year’s TEDxKids@Krakówspeakers, where kids shared their inventions, talents, passions, magic tricks and even tips for surviving an emergency!

TEDxKids@Kraków 2012
Above: Some of our speakers from TEDxKids@Kraków 2012.

Know any interesting kids with “ideas worth spreading”? Perhaps the Polish Kid President? We are now looking for interesting speakers (aged between about 10 and 13), so if you happen to know an energetic youngster with a great passion for something, let them share it by suggesting them as a speaker here by 5 March, or just click to find out more about the event.

The Undiscovered Await at TEDxKrakówLive 2013

For us here in Kraków, the biggest event we look forward to every year is our own TEDxKraków in October. However, we may be a bit biased, as for the rest of the world the big event is the original TED Conference in California – which of course we’re psyched about too! So much so that once again we will be streaming an entire day of it live, just for you (and us, of course)!

What exactly is TEDxLive? It’s a local TEDx event created around the live webcast of the TED2013 Conference, which means that you will be watching every Talk live just as if you were in California (albeit with slightly more snow outside, we assume) from the comfort of the Pauza basement. TEDxKraków has an exclusive licence from TED to stream the event, which means you will get to see each Talk long before it’s uploaded to TED’s website and shared with the rest of the world.

During the event, we will be livestreaming Sessions 4, 5, 6 and 7, whose themes are Disrupt!, Dream!, Create! and Sustain! [insert starting times here!]

The entire theme of TED2013 is The Young. The Wise. The Undiscovered., and you can expect a good assortment of all three categories throughout the day. While there are far too many speakers to name, you can take a look at the official TED2013 program for more details.

TEDxKrakówLive 2013 will take place on 28 February at Klub Pauza downstairs, with the first session starting at 5:30 pm. Registration begins on Monday, 11 February, and we highly suggest you register as soon as possible and then show up early on the 28th to make sure you snag a good spot!

Our event Partner Aon Hewitt prepared few surprises for You guys so see you at TEDxKrakówLive 2013 soon!

February Edition of TEDxKrakówCinema Tonight!

Once again, it’s cinema time! We’re looking forward to seeing you this Tuesday for the next edition of TEDxKrakówCinema. This time our guest will be Bartolomeo Kocenasz, who is one of the nominees in the 2012 Artist of the Year category of the “Kulturalne Odloty” contest organised by Gazeta Wyborcza in Krakow. We’ll be talking about the idea of creativity and the issues associated with it – how does it work? Where does our need to create and co-create arise? We’ll also discuss art and its role in the creative process. Can art be both exceptional and unique as well as practical? Bartolomeo will also talk about the art installations he has co-created with the viewer. How does this shape the final piece and how it’s read? Deep thoughts for the depths of winter…

We’ll be starting at 7pm in Kino Pauza on ul. Florianska 13. The meeting will be in Polish.

Bartolomeo Koczenasz is a smile activist, student of philosophy, creator of various art initiatives including the Smiley Planet travel project. He’s also a photographer who cooperates with the Babel Images Foundation (as well as TEDxKraków), and his work has won many awards. He’s taken part in street art festivals in Poland and abroad, been a speaker at TEDxYouth@Kraków in 2011 and is generally a great bloke!
