We really have a lot of surprises for you this year! Firstly, the successful TEDxKraków Award (details soon), and now… (drums) TEDxKraków Hackaton!
The first ever hackathon organised by a TEDx event will take place in the evening of 20 September 2012. The TEDxKraków Hackathon is a marathon for programmers and will see them create a range of mobile and web applications based on statistical date supplied by the Małopolska Voivode and with support from the Kraków branch of Sii sp. z o.o., sponsor of TEDxKraków.
This is a unique opportunity to leverage collaborative effort to create innovative mobile or web applications to serve the local community. Our hackaton is a unique event focused on creating solutions that deliver social value. We were really inspired by Jennifer Pahlka’s talk about Coding a Better Government at TED 2012 where she talked about her work at Code for America. Wouldn’t you love to see a Code for Małopolska If you’d like to get an idea of something that could be created during this type of hackathon, have a look at VanTrash – an application that provides Vancouver residents with up-to-date information about when their when rubbish will be collected and creates an invaluable communication channel between the authority and the citizens of the city.
We’re now looking for developers (mobile and web technologies) as well as graphic designers who’d like to participate! You can register via our website by 18 September. Capacity is very limited (only 20 people) and participants will be chosen so that we end up with 4 or 5 groups focusing on a single technology.
The TEDxKraków Hackaton will be held on 20 September at Kompany on ul. Berka-Joselewicza 21 in Kraków. We’ll present the database at the beginning of the event and outline the questions that could be tackled during Hackathon. Anyone can submit an idea for what could be created on the basis of this data – you just need to convince others that it’s worth creating a real, working application, program or website. We’re not going to limit to the ideas, the only criterion is that they’re social and non-commercial in nature. The people who are interested in a particular approach then form a team and work together on the project. For each team there will be one designer who will look after the graphic design of the application! Typical hackatons continue late into the night and even in the morning!
The application will be presented on the TEDxKraków stage the next day (21 September).
We look forward to your submissions!
